Hometree CLG is an environmental charity working to restore and protect native habitats across the west of Ireland, with a particular focus on temperate oceanic woodlands. Along with partners in NPWS, MTU and others, Hometree was recently awarded funding to implement a 4-year large-scale European Innovation Partnership (EIP). The EIP aims to establish mechanisms to integrate existing and new woodland into the designated and farmed landscapes of the Iveragh Peninsula in south Kerry.
We are seeking a project ecologist to support the delivery of this ambitious project throughout its lifecycle. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with technical and field experience and a passion for community-led nature restoration to be involved in impactful restoration efforts with a particular focus on the farmed landscapes of the uplands of south Kerry.
Role Overview:
The Project Ecologist will play a key role in the Iveragh Woodlands EIP through on-the-ground ecological surveys, the development of plans and strategies, monitoring, data analysis and reporting. Working within the Hometree ecology team and liaising closely with the rest of the project team, they will be integral to establishing ecological baselines and action plans to protect and create woodlands in the project area. The role will collate existing data, analysing and creating maps (in formats for both experts and non-experts), identifying knowledge gaps, collecting field data, working alongside the project coordinator and local participants and communities, and supporting the day-to-day delivery of this exciting project.
This role requires strong ecological survey skills, technical data management and analysis skills, GIS skills and the ability to work independently in outdoor environments. The recruited ecologist will work full time on the Iveragh Woodlands EIP for the first year and will be based in south Kerry. There is potential to work across other projects in Hometree in the future. We are also open to being flexible with working arrangements to accommodate the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities:
Integrate a wide range of data from existing datasets (which may even include local knowledge and archaeological information) to determine historical and current tree cover in the region and to identify sites where there is potential to allow existing woodlands to regenerate and expand.
Work as part of a team to establish strategies and map high-potential project areas based on National Survey of Native Woodland methodologies, potential natural vegetation mapping, and other relevant methodologies.
Develop management plans including Natura Impact Statements for project areas.
Work with local communities and farmers to implement management plans in line with restoration goals, socio-economic concerns, and existing agri-environmental schemes.
Develop, trial and assist with training project participants to use clear and effective monitoring methodologies to assess the effectiveness and impacts of restoration actions taken on the ground.
Collect, manage, and organise ecological monitoring data in line with Hometree’s protocols and reporting requirements of the funding body.
Prepare clear and concise field reports and contribute to project documentation, meetings, reporting and the wider project goals.
Liaise with landowners, contractors, and local community members during fieldwork and community meetings.
Support broader conservation and biodiversity initiatives led by the Hometree team.
Essential Requirements:
Degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in field-based ecology.
Proficiency in ecological survey methods, with good plant ID skills and habitat classification knowledge (e.g., Fossitt or EU Habitats).
Strong organisational and reporting skills.
Demonstrated experience in developing restoration plans and monitoring their impact.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Interest in working for an environmental charity and supporting community-based restoration.
A working knowledge of Gaeilge

The EIP aims to establish mechanisms to integrate existing and new woodland into the designated and farmed landscapes of the Iveragh Peninsula in south Kerry.
We are seeking a project coordinator to support the delivery of this ambitious project throughout its lifecycle. This is an exciting opportunity for an organised and passionate individual to lead the community engagement and restoration aspects of this project on the ground in south Kerry.
The Iveragh Woodlands EIP focuses on restoring, sustainably managing, and conserving both Annex 1 and non-annex native woodland habitats in the Iveragh Peninsula, Co. Kerry. Positioning landowners as key stakeholder, the project combines scientific research, insights from other EIPs, traditional land management knowledge, and stakeholder collaboration, to foster long-term environmental, cultural, and socio-economic stewardship across the region.
Role Overview:
The Project Coordinator will be a key driver of the Iveragh Woodlands EIP through on-the-ground engagement, the development of locally-relevant training and cultural programmes. The role will involve close collaboration with local farmers and the project ecologist to develop farm plans and support their implementation and monitoring. The Coordinator will work within the wider Hometree team and liaise closely with the project manager and the project partners in NPWS, MTU etc. This person will be integral to the implementation of this exciting project through the establishment and maintenance of local participant and stakeholder networks, the development of strong working relationships, coordination of the various activities in south Kerry, regular communications with the steering group and other project bodies, and reporting.
This role requires a good knowledge of the socio-economic, agricultural and cultural context of south Kerry or a similar area. As much of the project area is within a Gaeltacht, a good working knowledge of Gaeilge would be highly desirable. Knowledge of farming practices, agri-environmental schemes and Irish biodiversity and conservation policies would also be highly beneficial. As with all environmental projects, aspects may be contentious within certain circles. The recruited individual will have a proven ability to interact with people in a sensitive and non-confrontational way.
Normal full-time at Hometree is Monday-Thursday. The successful candidate(s) will be based in south Kerry with the option of accessing office space in a local digital hub. It is envisaged that the role will include extensive travel across the peninsula to meet with participants.
Key Responsibilities:
Work with the wider partnership to develop an appropriate, clear and effective financial mechanism to pay farmers for actions undertaken within the project in a way that does not jeopardise their future participation in agri-environmental schemes.
Establish and maintain a network of participating farmers and local communities on the Iveragh peninsula who will engage in restoration actions, training, cultural activities, and ensure the long-term impact of the project.
Act as a key link between Hometree, the wider project team, the project ecologist and the local community.
Contribute to farm-level management plans and work with farmers to implement, monitor and report on restoration actions taken.
Fully participate in the project steering group, working with other partners, project evaluators and the Hometree team to ensure that all contractual obligations are met.
Liaise closely with the grant manager to ensure that all reports are submitted on time and that all of the terms and conditions of the grant are adhered to.
Represent Hometree at a local level, attend conferences and events to disseminate the project and its activity, work closely with the Hometree communications team to ensure accurate and appropriate external communications.
Establish strong working relationships with local stakeholders to ensure that the project activities are responding to the needs of the local community. This includes the development of training initiatives, the development of business opportunities for the locality, and the development of follow-on and additional projects that may add value and impact to the EIP.
Essential Requirements:
Degree in ecology, environmental science, agricultural science, community development, geography or a relevant field.
Minimum of 3 years’ relevant professional experience
Familiarity with the socio-economic and cultural context of Iveragh or a similar region.
Strong organisational and reporting skills.
Demonstrated excellence in developing networks and relationships, interpersonal skills, and community engagement.
Experience of working in a community setting and communicating to a variety of audiences, particularly with sensitive topics.
Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
An ability or openness to communicate as Gaeilge.
Familiarity with agri-environmental schemes, biodiversity legislation, conservation policy, community-led environmental restoration and relevant farming practices.
Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently in a variety of settings.
Full clean driver’s licence.
Desirable Skills:
Experience of working in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary team
Experience in practical conservation tasks (e.g., tree planting, invasive species management).
Experience of developing cultural programmes, community engagement events, communications campaigns or similar.
